Data infographic consists of three elements:

  • An assertion

  • A description or annotation

  • A visualization of evidence

By selecting a data set, we analyze it to explore the data to identify patterns or interesting insights, and potentially create visualizations using tools like Tableau or excel.

01

Endangered Trees of Boston

We collected data on various tree species in a specific area of Boston to find patterns and create a compelling data story. We focused on the longest-lasting trees and those at risk of extinction in that area. The resulting infographic, created in Tableau with various conditions, was used to understand how soil and area development impact tree species.

Step 1

Collect and analyze data for research.

Downloaded a dataset on tree metrics in Somerville, Boston.

Imported the data into Excel to analyze various tree properties.

Identified a theme for experimenting with visualization.

Step 2

After identifying a theme, I visualized and categorized the tree data in Tableau to find patterns and refine the data story.

Step 3
Researching and finding data visualizations to support the data story led to our first data infographic, which highlights the rarest and most endangered trees in the area. Different colors represent different species.

Effects of Music on Mind

We found a dataset of surveys where people reported how music affected their mental health. It included different genres, age groups, self-attested mental health disorders, and self-attested improvement scores.

I utilized Excel to categorize the data, identify patterns, and gain insights. Our exploration included sketching ideas, focusing on the influence of different music genres, and comparing mental health outcomes between musicians and non-musicians.

Target Audience

  • Individuals with Anxiety, Depression, or ADHD

  • Parents of children with developmental disabilities

  • Doctors interested in using music in therapies

  • People with communication disorders

  • Speech Therapist

We determined the best data visualization diagrams to effectively convey our information and appeal to our target audience.

Final Infographic

By delving deeper into the subject, I researched additional articles and collected evidence to craft an infographic illustrating the impact of music on mental health and exploring contributing factors. After multiple revisions, we focused on key elements for the infographic. The initial color scheme was vague with excessive colors, so we reduced it to just four, each with a specific meaning.

Science Behind Skincolor (A Persuasive Infographic)

A persuasive infographic is a visual representation of data or information designed to influence and convince viewers of a specific viewpoint, idea, or call to action.

We approached the data and information from three angles:

  • Logic

  • Emotion

  • Ethics & Values

🌞

Our Initial Topic
Use Sunscreen to protect from harmful UV rays

My research started by explaining sunscreen use by educating people on UV rays, their harmful effects, and showing graphs of skin cancer risks across different regions of earth.

The Logical Approach

My challenge
I paused to consider the desired change I aimed to achieve through this approach, so I tried to see it from different angles.

🤔

After more research
I tried to understand what caused the difference in skin pigmentation

After further research, I shifted to a logical, educational, and emotional approach, addressing racism by explaining the scientific factors behind skin color, UV rays, and regional differences, aiming to eradicate biases based on skin color.

The Educational + Emotional + Logical Approach

My challenge
Our initial infographic lacked emotional depth and background on complexion bias, including who is responsible for perpetuating it.

Solution
We enhanced the narrative by addressing the impact of complexion bias, identifying responsible parties, and providing actionable solutions to mitigate its effects.
